M’hammad Benaboud, Ph.D. – Chairman

He studied in San Diego California and obtained his Ph.D. from Edinburgh University in 1978. He is the author of ten books and over one hundred Arabic, English, Spanish and French articles in specialized journals. He is also the author of five interactive CD ROMS on the cultural heritage cities of Morocco, including Tetouan, classified as a world heritage city by UNESCO in 1997. He obtained the Prize of Morocco for the Social Sciences in 1983. He has taught at or visited universities in Morocco, Europe, Asia, the U.S. and Latin America, including the universities of Madrid, Chicago, Lima, Lahore and Tokyo. At DAR LOUGHAT, he gives lectures on a variety of themes such as the cultural heritage city of Tetouan, Orientalism, Islamic history and culture, etc. He also organizes visits to the medina of Tetouan and to Tetouan’s museums. In his down time, he enjoys writing and hiking with his friends and family. He is married and the father of four children.

Zayd Benaboud, M.A. – Managing Director

He received his M.A. from the University of Montreal. He writes and speaks four languages fluently, namely Arabic, Spanish, English and French. He has traveled to Arabia, Brazil, Britain, Japan, Malaysia, Turkey, and throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. In the U.S, he participated in the International Visitor Program organized by the American Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He is in charge of coordinating all the activities at DAR LOUGHAT with the objective of making the students’ learning experience fruitful, pleasant and enjoyable. Outside of the office, he keeps busy hiking, biking and spending as much time as he can with his wife and 3 children.

Douha El Idrissi, B.A. – Administrative and Financial Assistant

Douha received her BA degree in Economics and Management from Abdel Malek Essaadi University in Martil in 2018 and she has been an English Department student at the same university since 2019. She joined Dar Loughat in 2020 as a receptionist, and now she is working as the administrative and financial assistant. Douha speaks Arabic as her mother tongue, English as a second language, French and is currently learning Spanish. What she enjoys the most about working at Dar Loughat is meeting new people from all over the world. Social work and volunteering are her main concerns when she is off work, she is a member of a scouts organization for peace. She also reads, sews, and enjoys learning more about other cultures.

Mohammed Reda Boudchar, Ph.D. – Pedagogical Advisor and Educational Consultant.

  • PH.D on Mysticism in Morocco and Al-Andalus

Mohamed Reda has published several articles on the history, culture and society of Al-Andalus and Morocco and participated in several national and international encounters on mystic thought in Morocco and Al-Andalus.

He has edited the third volume of Abdelwahhab Luqash’s Exegesis of the Qur’an and conducted a study on children and youth in Morocco and Al-Andalus. During his professional career, he has accumulated considerable experience instructing independent foreign students from several countries and study abroad groups from major universities. He has produced a new textbook for teaching Arabic as a foreign language and organized many training sessions for new teachers. He is also an active member of the Tetouan Asmir Association and the Mandri Cultural Heritage Centre. Outside classroom, he enjoys reading and spending time with his students in Tetouan’s old streets, museums and cafes.

Fatima Zahrae El Madani, M.A. – Language Instructor

  • She developed a special textbook for Colloquial Moroccan Arabic and co-wrote a unique compilation book of Tetouani tales.
  • She monitors and assists new teachers.
  • She has worked with many social associations to eradicate illiteracy. She enjoys reading and traveling and adores theatre.

Jamal Smahi, B.A – Language Instructor

  • He has worked with many human rights and social associations to bring to light and eradicate all sorts of abuses and social problems. During his career, he has collaborated with close to 100 human rights defenders and NGOs to promote their causes. He is also a very sharp observer of all local governments’ activities.

Ismail El Yakoubi, B.A – Language Instructor

Alaeddin Amhaouch – Assistant

Alaeddin joined the team in 2015. He is both Dar Loughat’s special assistant and pick-up and transfer driver. Always with a welcoming smile, he enjoys swimming, surfing the internet and guiding our students around Tetouan.
